For many girls in rural areas, menstruation is not just a biological process—it’s a barrier to education, health, and dignity. Despite progress in many parts of the world, access to basic menstrual hygiene products like sanitary pads remains a challenge.

Here are five challenges they face:

1. High Costs and Limited Availability: In many rural areas, sanitary pads are either unavailable or too expensive for families to afford regularly. This forces girls to resort to unsafe alternatives like rags, leaves, or paper.

2. Missed School Days: Without access to sanitary pads, many girls are forced to stay home from school during their period. This can lead to poor academic performance and, over time, a higher risk of dropping out altogether.

3. Lack of Awareness and Education: Many girls lack proper education about menstrual health. This lack of awareness contributes to feelings of shame, discomfort, and stigma around menstruation, making it harder for them to seek help or ask for sanitary products.

4. Cultural Stigma and Taboos: In some communities, menstruation is surrounded by stigma. Girls may be shamed or excluded from activities, making it even harder for them to openly talk about their menstrual needs.

5. Inadequate Sanitation Facilities: Rural schools and communities often lack clean, private sanitation facilities where girls can change pads comfortably. This discourages girls from attending school or participating in daily activities during menstruation.

Through our Sanitary Drive initiative, we are committed to breaking these barriers. By providing sanitary pads and educating girls about menstrual health, we hope to empower them to take control of their futures and lead healthier, more confident lives. Together, we can make a difference.
