As part of our ongoing Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign this month, we aim to shine a light on some of the most pressing concerns surrounding breast cancer. Despite advances in research and treatment, breast cancer remains a leading cause of illness and death among women globally. Awareness is key to early detection and effective treatment.
Below are seven common concerns every woman should be aware of:
1. Lack of Early Detection
Early detection saves lives, but many women, especially in underserved communities, do not have access to regular screenings. Mammograms, clinical exams, and self-examinations are crucial in catching breast cancer early, but lack of awareness and healthcare infrastructure can prevent timely diagnosis. Our campaign urges women to prioritize screenings and encourages organizations to make these services more accessible.
2. Fear of Diagnosis
The fear of being diagnosed with breast cancer often stops women from going for screenings or seeking medical advice when they notice unusual changes. This fear can lead to a delayed diagnosis, when the cancer is more advanced and harder to treat. We encourage women to see early detection not as something to fear, but as an empowering step toward controlling their health.
3. Financial Barriers to Treatment
Treatment for breast cancer can be expensive, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and follow-up care. Women in low-income regions or without adequate health insurance may find it difficult to afford these treatments. Through this campaign, we aim to raise awareness of the financial challenges and advocate for more affordable healthcare options for those affected.
4. Stigma and Myths
Many women, particularly in certain cultural contexts, face stigma around breast cancer. This can manifest in harmful myths, such as the belief that breast cancer is always fatal or that it only happens to older women. These misconceptions can prevent women from seeking early detection or treatment. Our campaign is dedicated to breaking these stigmas and providing accurate information.
5. Impact on Mental Health
The emotional and psychological toll of a breast cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming. Women often struggle with anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation. The fear of recurrence or dealing with body image changes after surgery can also affect their mental well-being. It’s essential to recognize that mental health support is just as important as physical treatment during the cancer journey.
6. Limited Awareness of Risk Factors
While some risk factors for breast cancer—such as family history—are well-known, there are many lifestyle-related factors that are often overlooked. Diet, exercise, alcohol consumption, and hormone replacement therapy can all impact breast cancer risk. Our awareness campaign emphasizes the importance of lifestyle choices in reducing risk and encourages women to adopt healthier habits.
7. Survivorship Challenges
Surviving breast cancer is a significant milestone, but the journey doesn’t end with remission. Survivors often face ongoing challenges, including managing side effects, fear of recurrence, and navigating life after treatment. Post-treatment care, such as regular check-ups and emotional support, is critical to long-term health and well-being. Our campaign also highlights the importance of supporting breast cancer survivors in their transition back to everyday life.

How Our Campaign Helps
PWS is dedicated to addressing these concerns through advocacy, education, and support. Our Breast Cancer Awareness Project at Seventh Day Adventist JHS at Wa is focused on increasing access to screenings, dispelling myths, and providing both physical and emotional support for those affected by breast cancer.
We believe that by raising awareness and offering resources, we can empower young girls to take control of their health, improve early detection, and survival rates.
How You Can Help
